Q: Provblems with acceleration and stalling in 2001 ford escape?
I have a 2001 Ford Escape with about 89k miles on it. Recently when i turn the car on when it is cold, it starts shaking and “jumping” like if the engine dosent havve enough power. When I tap the gas, it goes back to normal but then 2 seconds later it starts again. I took it to a mechanic and he changed the fuel filter thinking this would help the problem, but it didn’t. Also the car accelerated 2 times while in Park and without me stepping on the gas, when i chagend the gear to Drive it stopped, but when i put back in Park it started again, also when I changed the gear to Reverse it accelarated with a little bit of force. Wht do you guys think I should do?
Michael, yes the mechanic did find a tear in the vaccum hose and replaced with temporary flexible one, he did mention to try and buy the original hose the one that is more harder to flattened out because of the vaccum, and yes the check engine light is on.
Michael, I’m sorry, in laymans term what is exactly those codes you gave me? where do i look for them? is in the manual or online? and where would it show what to buy to repair?? Thanks for all your great feedback

A: It sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere, either from a cracked or collapsed PCV hose, or the upper to lower intake gaskets need to be replaced. The symptom you describe, would definitely show up when it’s cold outside. Is the ‘check engine’ light on?

You’ve just answered your own question then. The ‘check engine’ light being on would probably be for the codes P0171 & P0174, bank #1 and bank #2 system lean, which would cause EXACTLY what you describe. Don’t let anyone try to ’sell’ you parts you don’t need. Purchasing the part your mechanic mentioned from Ford will fix your problem.

Q: Honda Element or Ford Escape for a recent college grad?
I’m a recent college grad and my current car is beginning to fade – and has no trade-in value. I need a bigger car for my job but I don’t want begin spending large amounts of money on gas. I need something reliable, that I don’t have to worry about it breaking down since I tend to travel often. I am looking into the Honda Element or the Ford Escape. Any suggestions?

A: Ford Escape!!
I have a base 2009 Escape automatic and it has given me no problems. It has a huge back seat and trunk area. Also the 4 cylinder engine it has is very powerful, i’ve heard the Element’s isn’t very good and strains up hills. I also get 28 mpg overall, 50% highway at 75 mph and 50% city!

Q: How hard is it to switch the speedometer on a Ford Escape from km/h to mph?
My friend is buying a car that was apparently sold first in Canada and so the speedo only has km/h and that would cause a problem. So how hard is it to replace the dial with mph, and is it even possible? Another thing I’m wondering is where to get the parts. What do you think? Junk yard? eBay? Thanks.
PS: it’s a 2003 Ford Escape

A: You can’t. You must go to the dealership or a shop.

Q: How can i get 4 wheel drive on my 2003 ford escape?
i currently have a 2003 ford escape which was not equipped with 4 wheel drive when it was originally bought. I would like to make it 4 wheel drive. What i want to know is can i do that and how much will it cost me?
i thank you both for your answers…i had no idea it would be that expensive…my first car was 4wd it was a jeep RIP lol i rolled it. thanks

A: Roughly 15-17K in new parts, several thousand in used parts. The axles, trans, a lot of electrics, on and on. Basically you can keep the engine, body and some of the other parts. Mush cheaper to buy another one and journey onwards. If you want to do this for sentimental reasons, better to keep it stock.

Q: air leak from recirc door on 1992 ford escape?
I have a 1992 ford escape with an airleak while driving from the seal on the ac recirc door. Foam does not seem distorted and door operates properly-only opening when max ac is turned on. But when closed I get a bad draft from around the seal. Gets very very cold during the winter while driving-had to duct tape over opening on heater case for the winter
no comments from the peanuts gallery. Serious answers only please!
Thank you!

A: Did you mean escort?Sound like the door is not closing all the way.

Q: Does anyone tow boats with their Ford Escape?
Thinking of buying a boat and was wondering if our 2001 Ford Escape V-6 XLT would be a good vehicle for transporting a 2500-3000 pound boat and taking it in and out of a boat landing. Can the vehicle handle it? Can it pull a boat out of the water without any trouble? I need people who have towed boats with an escape to respond.

A: The V6 with the towing package has a 3500lb towing capacity, so you should be okay. Make sure you have a transmission cooler which is mandatory with towing. I have a friend who tows a 2280lb Four Winns 180 Horizon and with no issues. Expect more frequent brake checks and follow the more aggressive oil change schedule in your maintaince book.

Q: I have an ‘04 Ford Escape and was wondering if i can find a turbo chargher that can fit it?
For gas conservation as well as horsepower and torque reasons, i was wondering if there is a turbocharger on the market specifically for a ford escape ‘04 or at least one that can fit.

A: you can make any turbo work for any car but it takes alot of work for certain ones try to finds a turbo for the same size engine and same make of car it will probly make it easyer to have put on

Q: Can someone please tell me how much it’ll cost to get the radiator replaced in my 2005 Ford Escape?
Can someone please tell me how much it’ll cost to get the radiator replaced in my 2005 Ford Escape? Additional details …
It has a V6 engine and a automatic transmission.
I found a replacement radiator online for $133.95 but I just need to know how much the labor will be and how many hours is listed in the shop rate book for this particular job.

A: call a local shop and ask them, labor rates are generally between 70 and 80 dollars and hour now.

Q: Is the Ford Escape a good/reliable car?
I really like the Ford Escape, and im planning on getting it for my first car. However, a few people have told me that it breaks down alot, but i have heard the opposite too. So i just wanted to know what you guys think! Thanks!

A: I drove it for a rental car and put about 300 miles on it. I hate ford, but after I drove the escape, I don’t mind spending the money to purchase one! Believe it or not, the gas mileage was the same as my ‘06 nissan sentra! That’s why I sold the damn thing. As for reliability, go to www.carpoint.com and click on used cars or new cars then click on the scroll down option and click on ford escape and look up the consumer reviews. It’s the best site really, I buy cars based on that website alone.
Also, I have a friend that drove a bunch of small suv’s and ended up with the escape.

Q: where is the spare tire located on the 2004 ford escape xlt?
I am thinking about purchasing a 2004 Ford Escape XLT and I was wondering if the spare tire was located under the car or in the trunk?

A: In back under the floor. You can get it from inside.

Q: If I wanted to install HID lighting into my ford escape, what would I have to do?
I want to put HID xenon bulbs into my 2005 Ford Escape, now the few conversion kits I have researched say “low beam” (does this mean I can’t use my highbeams anymore?) so if I wanted to install the HID lights into my car, lets say 7k or 8k, what would I have to do?

A: Your Ford Escape uses H11 bulbs for the low beams so you would replace the low beams with a HID kit. You will still be able to use your high beams as normal.

Installation is fairly simple. Kits come with instructions and are all plug and play (at least the ones we offer)

They are available from www.Kryptonbulbs.com

Q: Can anyone tell me how to install speakers in Ford Escape?
I have purchased 4 pioneer 4-way 6×8 for my 2003 Ford Escape. It has the factory upgraded stereo in it,cd,cassette etc. I Can anyone tell me how to get the door panels off? And if there is anything else I need to do besides wiring them up.I would like to also add 2 tweeters in the front in order to bring the sound up toward the top, because now it sounds like all the sound is in the floor area! Can anyone help me ? I am really good about fixing things and no I can do this with a little guidance. Can someone guide me

A: take out all the screws in the panel (handle, bottom, sides, pocket, light)

be carefull popping the panel off, they sell a panel tool that looks like a flat fork that has a slot to get right up to the anchors
(they sell the plastic anchors at the local hardware store)

most likely start at the bottom and work your way around, you have to pop like 5 around the bottom. after you get the panel flapping jut lightly tap it upward to release it from the top mount and your good

there will probly be electrical connectors on the back panel so dont let the panel drop

Q: Has anyone had a problem with defective wheel bearings in a 2005 Ford Escape?
My Escape started making a noise at about 35,000 miles. At the time the dealership said it was the tires. I replaced the tires. The noise did not change at all and now has progressively worsened and now they are telling me the right, left AND center wheel bearings need to be replaced (at my expense since now the car has 42,000 miles). They did say the bearings are still sealed and there is no water damage and no other obvious damage. I think they must be defective and Ford should replace them as from what I understand it would be very unlikely for all 3 to just go out at 35,000 miles. I’d like to know if Ford has addressed this problem for anyone else and also if anyone has any ideas on how to make Ford provide the parts and repairs at no cost to me.

A: I searched at the NHTSA-odi (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – office of defects investigations)website & found no other ; complaints, recalls, investigations, or technical service bulletins regarding wheel bearings on ‘05 Ford Escapes.

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

When it was recommended to replace the tires at 35000
miles & that did NOT solve the problem, you should have let the service dept. know this IMMEDIATELY.
It seems unusual (to me) that you would replace tires that soon, but I have no idea as to what kind of driving conditions you have.
Waiting, to complain, for another 7000 miles & an expiring warranty was not a wise decision on your part.

Q: How Much can I get a Ford Escape for?
What is a good estimated dealler price for a Ford Escape? How much did you, if you did, buy yours for? Would the X deal save me a good amount of money?
ANY QUESTIONS ANSWERED WOULD BE GOOD HELP, THANKS :)
Oh, I’m sorry…
Looking into new 2008 vehicle

A: It would really help if you included what year the model is. A used one that’s around 7 to 10 years old would sell for about 5000 to 8500. A younger one around 3 to 5 years old would sell for about 10,000 to 13,000. A brand new one would be about 25,000. Taxes not included.

Q: Is the 4 cylinder Ford Escape good on gas?
I’m speaking of the regular 2WD automatic version and not the hybrid model. I have an old 4 cylinder Ford Ranger that gets a lackluster 18-20 MPG highway so is the Escape at least a little better? I always see a ton of them in town so that has to mean something right? Are they on par or better than a Rav4? Any details at all would really be appreciated.

Also, I’ve already checked fueleconomy.gov, but I want details from real owners of the 4-banger Escape.

A: 18-20 on a 4cyl Ranger is HORRIBLE!!! My friend gets 25 in town and 30 on the highway with his.
SUVs generally have heavier bodies, so they would get worse fuel mileage than cars and trucks with the same size engine.
